Frequently Asked Questions about Project Teaching
If I already have a degree in education can I add a subject by student teaching through Project Teaching (e.g. You are an elementary teacher in Wisconsin and want to become certified in art.)
The Project Teaching program is for those persons without a teaching license. The EdNova program is for those persons who already have a Wisconsin teaching license.
I have a full-time job teaching in a school with an emergency permit. Can Project Teaching help me?
Yes, if you have the appropriate subject area major. When you complete all of our requirements, you can student teach while you are working. Your school would appoint a cooperating teacher.
I have a full time job teaching and I am in Project Teaching but am not able to be certified on other levels other than the level I am teaching on. How can you help?
Any alternative plan for student teaching must be approved by Project Teaching ahead of time. (e.g. You teach mathematics in high school as your regular job, but spend your prep time in a middle school classroom.)
What is the requirement for lesson planning, helping the cooperating teacher, and actual teaching during the 18 weeks?
See handbook – Roles and Responsibilities in Required Teaching
I plan to student teach the next semester after I finish my course work. What must I have completed before Student Teaching?
See handbook - A Checklist for Student Teaching
How late can I wait to student teach after I have completed my course work? Is there a time limit?
You must complete student teaching within two years of your initial semester.
How long do I student teach? What if I get sick? What about missing days?
Wisconsin Statue s.118.19(3)(a) states, ”… each student in the program is required to complete student teaching consisting of full days for a full semester following the daily schedule and semester calendar of the cooperating school….” Project Teaching requirements can be found in the Handbook.
What about the Substitute Permit?
Project Teaching requires that all students must have a valid and up-to-date substitute permit in order to student teach. The PI-1602-EL form for licensing is found on-line. There is a fee and a letter from a school superintendent stating the need for this permit is required.
How much time do I need to spend student teaching in the middle school and in the high school during the semester? Is it half & half?
Most placements are one quarter in high school and one quarter in middle school in either order. Some placements in “same building” schools, might be morning in the middle school, afternoon in the high school. Other combinations may be possible, but must be decided by Project Teaching. Contact our office.
My potential certification will be birth to age 21. How do I student teach in elementary school? Is it 18 weeks divided three ways?
Usually. Alternatives must be approved by Project Teaching.
I plan to student teach this coming semester and started the arrangements with Project Teaching. Something has come up and now I can’t student teach. Now what?
Contact the Project Teaching person that you have been working with or call the Project Teaching office right away. It is important to note that the schools principal and teachers have spent time and effort to get you placed with them. You don’t want to leave a bad impression with the school because you may need a job there sometime.
As I student teach, what if I have problems with the cooperating teacher or principal?
Talk to your supervising teacher first. If things can’t be solved, contact the Project Teaching office.
